Recently the Australian Industry & Skills Committee published a Communique outlining decisions relating to skills and qualifications within Training Packages including Cases for Change, Cases for Endorsement and projects commissioned through the Industry Skills Forecasts. The Racing Training Package has had various approvals, as has a commissioned project “ACM Animal Care and Management – to work safety around animals and align with changed industry practice and job roles in a project relevant also to the Racing IRC and the Agriculture and Production Horticulture IRC.”
The relevant Industry Skills Forecasts for the
Animal Care & Management Industry Reference Committee (IRC) and the Racing  IRC noted large animal rescue and skills involved in dealing with incidents involving animals as one of the work areas, amongst several listed, where updates are recommended to take place in order to align job skills more closely with contemporary animal welfare and WHS requirements.

A guiding document supporting reviews of safety in training where horses are involved, and continuous improvement in many horse related workplaces (including non-profits and events) is the Code of Practice: Managing risks when new or inexperienced riders or handlers interact with horses, which was gazetted by the NSW Government in January this year under their WHS Act.  NSW info on how Codes interface with an Act can be found here.

To assist non-profit organisations and businesses, Horse SA is planning further educational seminars around equine law & business/club practices. In May 2018, the People.Horses.Culture Conference will return to SA. This 3rd national event looks at safer workplaces for people and horses, and importantly, an event to keep up with continuous improvement activities to meet WHS compliance and related welfare topics taking place within our horse industry, including the sport and recreation sectors.

In closing, it’s 11 days until the People’s Choice Credit Union raffle closes (win a Car/ 130 prizes) and 10 days until the Royal Adelaide Show starts – spring is almost here!

Happy Riding!
