Get into horses

If you are interested to get into Thoroughbred racing, 'How to own a racehorse ' gives an overview of ways to start out. Thoroughbred stud stock and racehorses are available for sale in South Australia. Magic Millions, which conduct sales at their premises in Morphettville, have prepared information about buying your first racehorse

If you are interested in buying a Standardbred for harness racing or breeding, contact the SA Breeders, Owners, Trainers & Reinsman Association (SA Harness).

If you are buying your first horse for riding, it is best to discuss requirements with your riding coach or another experienced person who knows and understands your personal abilities and constraints. The horse and rider need to be as well ‘matched’ or compatible with each other as possible for safety and enjoyment. It is advisable to obtain a veterinary check and collect other background information  e.g. registration papers, temperament references, before purchasing the horse.

Once you have experienced selecting and purchasing a few horses, then further options will open up including re-training a horse that has raced or breeding your own.  Check the business directory on this website for studs, coaches or trainers.

Other ways to get into full-time horse care without the upfront financial layout include loaning, leasing or taking on care for a horse through a sanctuary. In all circumstances, it is important to have agreements in place and appropriate insurance.

From time to time Horse SA conducts educational events on topics related to getting into horses.
